JOB SUMMARY

The Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) plays a critical role in supporting newcomer children, youth, and their families during their settlement and integration process. This position involves developing and implementing strategies that address the unique challenges faced by newcomer students, fostering their social, emotional, and educational well-being. By conducting needs assessments, organizing group activities, and facilitating peer support programs, the SWIS ensures clients receive comprehensive and timely support. The role requires close collaboration with schools, school boards, community organizations, and other stakeholders to deliver school-based settlement services, advocate for client needs, and build partnerships. Through a combination of office-based work and fieldwork, including regular visits to schools and community agencies, the SWIS empowers newcomer families to navigate the Canadian education system and integrate into their communities successfully.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CLIENT SUPPORT/ADVOCACY AND STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT

  • Conduct needs assessments to identify challenges and goals for newcomer students and their families.
  • Develop strategies to address the unique challenges faced by newcomer students.
  • Advocate for the student’s needs within the educational system and community.
  • Provide referrals to appropriate resources and coordinate services to support integration.
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress, offering ongoing support as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and school staff to support the academic and social integration of newcomer students.
  • Provide information, orientation and training sessions for teachers and school staff on cultural sensitivity and effective strategies for supporting newcomer students.
  • Organize group activities and facilitate peer support programs to enhance social and emotional well-being.
  • Foster and maintain strong partnerships with schools, school boards, and community organizations
  • Collaborate with various community organizations to deliver school-based settlement services.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION

  • Develop and implement programs, workshops, and activities for newcomer students and their families.
  • Coordinate events that foster social and educational integration, such as information sessions, peer support activities, and skill-building workshops.
  • Adapt programs based on feedback and the evolving needs of students and families.
  • Organize and facilitate meetings, information sessions, and workshops with individuals and groups.
  • Develop strategies tailored to the needs of diverse youth populations.
  • Collaborate with community organizations to deliver effective programs.
  • Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, making adjustments as needed.
  • Gather and analyze data to support continuous improvement efforts.
  • Provide training and guidance to staff involved in program delivery.

ADMINISTRATION AND DATA MANAGEMENT

  • Accurately maintain and update client records, including case notes and service plans in the appropriate database system, ensuring that all information is properly documented and easily accessible.
  • Perform administrative duties such as scheduling appointments, preparing reports, and coordinating communication.
  • Compile and analyze data to assess program effectiveness and support continuous improvement efforts.
  • Conduct regular follow-ups with clients to monitor their progress and provide additional support as needed.
  • Follow established protocols and standards to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and security of all data entered.
  • Accurately compile and organize physical client files, ensuring all relevant documents and information are included and properly filed in accordance with established protocols.

QUALIFICATIONS

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Proficiency in English, both oral (speaking, listening) and written (reading, writing), is required.
  • Proficiency in additional languages, including French, Arabic, Dari, Pashto, Spanish, and Somali, is considered an asset.

EDUCATION

  • Post-secondary Degree OR Diploma in a related discipline

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE

  • Experience supporting vulnerable and marginalized youth with complex needs from diverse cultural, ethnic, and ability backgrounds.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the specific challenges and barriers faced by immigrant and refugee youth during settlement and integration.
  • Familiarity with cultural, social, and economic factors influencing newcomer youth.
  • Proven experience designing and delivering youth-focused programs, activities, and events.
  • Expertise in developing and implementing strategies tailored to the needs of diverse youth populations
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with schools, community organizations, and other stakeholders effectively.
  • Proficiency in establishing and maintaining partnerships that enhance youth programs and services.
  • Skilled in using technology and social media platforms to engage youth and promote programs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 Workspace and Adobe Reader (e.g., Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PDF); ability to learn additional programs as needed.
  • Strong time and resource management skills to manage client caseloads, maintain client data, and document progress effectively and accurately.
  • Knowledge of de-escalation techniques and tools.
  • Deep awareness of and respect for cultural diversity, employing effective interpersonal and intercultural communication techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills, emphasizing reflective listening and thoughtful responses.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Proven adaptability to dynamic situations with a calm and professional demeanour.
  • Strong commitment to maintaining privacy and confidentiality in all interactions.

OTHER

  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Demonstrated passion for providing exceptional client experiences for newcomers
  • Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence and clean driving record are required
  • Ability to perform physical demands, e.g., lifting and loading program materials/equipment
  • Perform other tasks as assigned
