Registered Practical Nurse- Ambulatory Care – Orthopedic Clinic

Ambulatory Care is an outpatient department, which provides service to patients with varying needs such as care in the areas of: urology, minor procedures, orthopedics, medication administration, transfusion services, wound care and pre / post-operative care and education.  Under the direction of Orthopedic Surgeons and in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team, the RPN in the Orthopedic Clinic provides a complete range of orthopedic technology services. Upon certification by the Chief of Orthopedics, the RPN performs delegated medical acts and skills related to the care of the orthopedic patients.

Duties:

  1. Provide nursing care in accordance with the College of Nurses, organizational and unit standards.
  2. Participate and collaborate with other health care providers in provision of patient care.
  3. Responsible for making clinical decisions, exercising judgment to ensure best possible nursing care is provided within available resources.
  4. Provide health teaching to patients and family.
  5. Is cognizant of and participates in the development of the Nursing and Unit objectives.
  6. Is compliant with legislation, organizational/departmental, regulations, standards and procedures related to occupational health and safety
  7. Perform other assigned duties in the Ambulatory Care clinics.

Qualifications:

  • Current certificate of competency in Ontario
  • Registered Orthopedic Technologist with the Canadian Society of Orthopedic Technologists or Willingness to enroll in the Canadian Society of Orthopedic Technologists program prior to start date
  • Current 2 years’ experience in an orthopedic setting to include aseptic technique and casting proficiency.

Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated clinical competency in the care and management of patients requiring:
    • wound care
    • Surgical procedures, including aseptic technique
    • Orthopedic care, including cast care
    • Pre and post-operative assessment, care and education
    • Minimally invasive medical procedures
    • IV Therapy

Ability:

  • Ability to demonstrate competency in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
  • Demonstrated ability to function efficiently in a fast paced clinical setting
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and organization skills
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and work independently
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain successful working relationships; ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner, both in person and on the telephone; tact, courtesy and alertness in public contacts
  • Train and develop the skills of others
  • Must be able to accept direction yet work independently
  • Demonstrated behaviour consistent with the Hospital’s mission, vision, and ICCARE values.
