Summary of Position:

Reporting to the Director of Social Accountability, Analytics, and Risk, the Manager of Indigenous Health provides vision, plans and leadership to the organization aimed at embedding culturally safe care practices, policies and processes. The Manager will engage meaningfully with First Nations, Inuit and Métis organizations, communities and leaders to build and nurture relationships and develop partnerships, to listen and understand what’s important to them. They will be an advocate and will assist that cultural diversity is acknowledged and that the needs of the patients and families are heard and understood by the health care providers. This includes leading the evolution and implementation of:

  • an engagement strategy to guide development and nurturing of meaningful, reciprocal relationships with First Nations, Inuit and Métis governments, organizations, and agencies.
  • an ongoing learning approach for all staff, building on an in-house mandatory cultural training program
  • the identification and development of a core set of indicators to support the comparable measurement and reporting of cultural safety
  • data analysis and capacity building in response to requests from First Nations, Inuit and Métis governments, organizations and communities.

Job Duty – Management:

  • Ensures appropriate staffing levels by recruiting and monitoring staffing levels, addressing any staffing issues that may arise and proactively planning for future workforce requirements.
  • Schedules staff in collaboration with Staffing and Scheduling to meet the needs of the department.
  • Ensures department is operating in an environmentally friendly manner.
  • Develops and implements short and long term decisions (present – 1 year) for own team.
  • Develops operational plans that align and support department services and organizational strategic priorities.
  • Develops, organizes, and facilitates department orientation and on-going training activities.
  • Ensures that required equipment/resources in department are available and in good repair.
  • Ensures all functions of payroll are completed as required.
  • Maintains regular communication and collaboration with other departments.
  • Maintains current knowledge of best practices and benchmarks relevant to the delivery of high quality services.
  • Completes and manages department budget including the creation of operating and capital plans.
  • Monitors and analyzes department metrics and trends and develops appropriate actions.
  • Ensures that department policies, procedures, systems and accountability measures are in place.
  • Responds to departmental client concerns.
  • Makes resources available to support strategic initiatives, operational projects and process improvements.
  • Identifies, champions and implements improvements/changes to delivery of services through collaboration with stakeholders using the principles of lean and change management.
  • Makes specific changes in work methods or operations to improve performance and deliver results.
  • Develops and defines department objectives and goals in line with larger organizational goals.
  • Uses data to identify opportunities for improved service delivery, customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.
  • Communicates regularly with clients to assess level of satisfaction with services provided and implements remedial actions as necessary within available resources.
  • Accountable for managing employee absenteeism and minimizing over-time.

Job Duty – Indigenous Health Strategy:

  • Understands connections across issues, challenges and opportunities facing First Nations, Métis and Inuit across our community and the north.
  • Contributes to the development and oversees the implementation of plans and budgets for the Indigenous Health Strategy.
  • Implements opportunities where Sault Area Hospital (SAH) can support First Nations, Inuit and Métis identified health and health data priorities, and First Nations, Inuit and Métis led partnerships and initiatives and apply the learnings to broader organizational strategy.
  • Provides expertise and advice to the CEO, Vice-Presidents, Directors, and other groups as required.
  • Provides subject matter expertise on a range of issues related to Indigenous partnerships, health and data.
  • Advances ways to build this knowledge and understanding into the broader organization.

Job Duty – Collaborative Partnerships

  • Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with local First Nation communities and agencies.
  • Partners with organizations to develop strategies and work plans to evolve SAH Truth and Reconciliation commitments.
  • Liaises with service providers and suppliers to support the coordination of necessary services, equipment & devices, medical supplies and transportation when needed.
  • Develops a work plan with key targets and timelines to address support issues, cultural needs and networking with FNIM communities.
  • Works with SAH Leaders and Indigenous System Leader(s) to assist with improved services.
  • Facilitates Indigenous people’s access to health care services that is culturally and linguistically appropriate.

 Job Duty – Indigenous Education:

  • Promotes indigenous cultural al awareness and competency
  • Plans, develops and/or delivers on training modules and content.
  • Provides education to staff around Indigenous Cultures and customs
  • Educates staff on Indigenous cultural beliefs that include, but are not limited to smudging, accessing sweat lodges or other services available that lend to holistic traditional health approaches

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have Indigenous lived experience and a demonstrated connection to Indigenous cultures and communities, with the ability to embed traditional knowledge, values, and approaches in health planning and engagement
  • Postgraduate degree in Indigenous Health, a health discipline, public administration or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • 3-5 years of management experience in Indigenous health, health information, research or related fields, including demonstrated experience in successful staff management and development.
