Position Summary
The Epidemiologist conducts population health assessment and surveillance for Algoma Public Health (APH) through the development, use, and reporting of health and health equity indicators, and the systematic collection, collation, analysis, and dissemination of data to internal and external stakeholders for public health action. As part of the Foundations and Strategic Support Team, the Epidemiologist builds organizational capacity in public health sciences, including the use of data and evidence to inform and evaluate public health interventions toward the goal of improving population health and health equity.
The Epidemiologist will:
• Apply advanced knowledge of population health, determinants of health, and evidence-informed decision making to support the work of local public health.
• Collaborate with other members of the Foundations and Strategic Support Team across all foundational standards.
• Analyze and report on the distribution and determinants of health and disease states, including health disparities.
• Identify emerging issues and trends related to health status and related determinants of various population groups.
• Collaborate and consult with program managers and teams to provide data collection, analysis and knowledge translation support to programs for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
• Conduct surveillance on priority population health concerns.
• Create and maintain data and information systems necessary for population health assessment and surveillance activities of the health unit.
• Plan, lead and organize new methods for obtaining additional health data, as well as improving the reliability and validity of health data currently being collected by program areas.
• Synthesize and distill information from a variety of public health reporting systems (such as iPHIS, IntelliHealth Ontario, Better Outcomes Registry & Network) and large-scale, population health monitoring datasets (such as the Canadian Community Health Survey) to inform decision making.
• Establish new and maintain effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders and foster links in areas of mutual interest.
• Support education and training opportunities for staff and student learners through direct or indirect supervision and/or consultation.
• Use appropriate data visualization techniques to present results in a meaningful and appropriate format for the intended audience.
• Write reports (technical reports, web-based summaries) and other forms of communication (such as infographics, journal articles, abstracts, presentations).
• Prepare and deliver presentations on population health information and related epidemiological issues for internal staff, the public and external agencies, as required.
• Respond to requests for population health status information from staff, the public, external agencies and organizations, and the media, as directed.
• Liaise with public health units, research and information organizations, external agencies and organizations to provide access to current epidemiological and population health status knowledge and for collaborative initiatives.
• Provide mentorship and direct support to the data analyst.
In situations where need arises, be able to assume responsibility for and manage the organization’s program of activities under the Population Health Assessment foundational standard of the Ontario Public Health Standards.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills for this position include (but not limited to):
• Master’s degree in epidemiology or related discipline and/or combined relevant experience.
• Experience working in a public health setting an asset.
• Ability to conceptualize and manage major epidemiological projects with minimal supervision.
• Knowledge of major population health data sources in the Canadian and Ontario context.
• Advanced ability to manage data and information in compliance with principles, best practices and legislation pertaining to privacy and research ethics.
• Experience in health data analysis including advanced methods in biostatistics and epidemiology.
• Ability to use and learn statistical software and related platforms such as R and MS Excel- intermediate.
• Knowledge of geospatial analysis and experience with GIS applications an asset.
• Knowledge of and experience in quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.
• Ability to prepare and deliver high quality knowledge products, including written reports and presentations for diverse audiences and purposes.
• Demonstrated skills related to knowledge translation, consultation, facilitation, and capacity building among diverse audiences.
• The ability to communicate (verbally & in writing) in French and/or any other language(s) will be considered an asset.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
• Must be reliable and have a good attendance record.
• Ability to work outside regular business hours, including weekends and evenings, as required.
• Requires a valid “G” Ontario Driver’s License and use of a reliable vehicle.
