Salary Range: $127,621 – $151,942

Reporting to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Chief –Fire Operations oversees all operations, functions and activities of Fire Operations, Training Divisions and Support Services Division and is responsible for giving proper strategic direction. They ensure departmental services are delivered in accordance with Council approved level of service, appropriate Government Legislation and City Policy.
Primary Duties and Accountabilities include but are not limited to:
- Develop and implement strategies
- Create business plans
- Build effective team of leaders
- Adhere to the City’s short and long-term plans of established policies and legal guidelines
- Conduct research, coordinate, prepare and review various reports
- Present reports to various stakeholders, including Council and attend Council, as required
- Devise remedial actions for identified issues and conduct crisis management as needed
- Establish standards and policies for delivery of services to ensure a quality level of efficient services is provided in compliance with Provincial/Municipal guidelines and policies
- Oversee departmental budgets
- Consult with groups, agencies, citizens, Provincial Ministries, other Municipal Departments
- Act as the Lead for the Sault Ste. Marie Regional Training Center
- Set framework of work to be completed and services to be provided and follow up
- Analyze legislation, regulations, policies and procedures to ensure compliance
- Oversee the work practices and procedures; establish priorities and control work quality
- Supervise employees in accordance with City policy and applicable collective agreements
- Provide coverage of Fire Chief, as needed
- Perform all other related duties
Qualifications:
- University Bachelor’s Degree, in a related field, e.g. Business Administration, Finance, etc. preferred or; University or College Fire Service Administration, Fire Service Executive Management
- Computer literacy in Microsoft including experience in Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Knowledge of Fire System/Software; e.g. Crysis, is an asset.
- Ten years of progressive managerial responsibility, preferably in a municipal fire service environment:
o Management and Supervision
o 24/7 Operations
o Training and Development - Professional Firefighter experience, preferred
- Strong understanding of corporate finance and measures of performance
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability in decision-making and problem-solving
- Excellent organizational and leadership skills
- In depth knowledge of municipal governance principals and managerial best practices
