Summary

To effectively control all work on the project job site to see that the project is constructed in close conformity with the plans and specifications while ensuring methods used are safe, efficient, economical, expedient, and of high quality.

Duties

  • Be thoroughly familiar with and understand project documentation including the specifications, project drawings and schedules, etc.
  • Manage day to day labour requirements and be able to lead and direct in high pressure situations.
  • Be highly organized with the ability to prioritize required tasks on a day to day basis.
  • Navigate basic computer programs, email and construction applications.
  • Effectively communicate orally with all members of the construction team as well as effectively negotiate and resolve any conflicts which may arise.
  • Plan and supervise the set-up of temporary field facilities such as power, offices, construction roads, etc.
  • Be proactive in all aspects of construction requirements including adapting to changes as they apply to each project.
  • Supervise, check and/or perform the surveying and layout required for the construction of all portions of the project.
  • Effectively plan and carry out the work (in conjunction with Project Manager) to ensure an efficient, expedient and economical program of construction. Study and compare alternate methods of carrying out various operations for maximum economy.
  • Ensure the preparation of time sheets for all directly employed labour.
  • Ensure the proper completion of office work such as but not limited to:
  1. Accident reports
  2. Material delivery reports
  3. Daily reports
  4. Cost coding of all delivery slips
  5. Extra work orders
  6. Filing of drawings, change orders, correspondence, etc.
  • In-depth understanding, knowledge and implementation of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Enforce the Trench Excavators Act as a minimum safety standard.
  • Schedule all on-site activity with sub-contractors and suppliers to effectively manage each project.
  • Expedite the delivery of all materials for own work and major materials for all sub contractors.
  • Ensure that the work is carried out in close conformity with the plans and specifications.
  • Be constantly alert to protect the interests of the company by paying close attention to details of construction. Poor design, unsuitable soil bearing, defective materials, or other potential dispute-causing situations can be avoided by an alert superintendent.
  • Attend bi-weekly or as directed job meetings with architect and/or owner.
  • Chair weekly meetings of all trades to plan and monitor progress of project on a weekly basis.
  • Supervise the proper utilization and maintenance of equipment and tools. Avoid renting equipment that is not being effectively utilized.
  • Be responsible for security of a project including all materials, equipment and tools.
  • Maintain site cleanliness at all times.
  • Play an effective role in the expeditious cleanup of all deficiencies.
  • Familiarity with the IHSA COR Certification Process an asset
