The Ministry of the Attorney General, Criminal Law Division (north region), offers an opportunity for a lawyer to conduct prosecutions and perform related functions as an Assistant Crown Attorney.

The Criminal Law Division is a large geographically dispersed operation with approximately 1900 staff who help protect community and personal safety through prosecution of offences across the province. The division’s vision is to be the foremost prosecution service in Canada, and this vision is supported through the divisional mission, values, and key strategies.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Duties will include:

  • Screening and preparing cases
  • Performing case management functions, and conducting prosecutions for criminal and quasi-criminal offences in the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice
  • Providing professional advice to police and related agencies on criminal matters
  • Drafting indictments
  • Assisting senior counsel with prosecutions and research
  • Working cooperatively with other justice sector partners
  • Occasional travel (land or air) may be required to various locations within the Province

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

  • Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Valid Ontario Class ‘G’ Driver’s license

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, criminal law procedures, rules of evidence and case law
  • Knowledge and understanding of the role and function of a prosecutor in the criminal justice system in Ontario
  • Proven judgment and analytical ability to determine appropriate legal remedies
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, presentation and communication skills and proven ability to work with Indigenous communities
  • Ability to use computer technology and its related software
  • Ability and willingness to travel to various locations within the North Region and or Province which include but not limited to Blind River, Elliot Lake, Thessalon, Wawa
