Human Resource Generalist (HRG)

Job Type: Full Time

Salary Range: $58,000 – $65,000 to commensurate with qualifications/experience

Current hours of Work: 35.5 Hours/Week (paid 40 hrs/wk)

IFCSSM is seeking a dedicated and culturally grounded Human Resource Generalist (HRG) to support our growing team. This role is key to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful workplace that reflects Indigenous values and upholds human rights principles. Working closely with leadership, the HRG will support all areas of human resources, including recruitment, culturally-based programming, employee relations, training, policy development, health and safety, and benefits administration. The successful candidate will play an important role in strengthening positive workplace culture, supporting staff, and advancing equity and reconciliation within the organization.

Human Resources Services and Administration

  • Provide HR services and support aligned with Indigenous values and organizational frameworks
  • Maintain accurate and confidential employee records in accordance with privacy legislation
  • Support HR communications, employee engagement, and workplace culture initiatives
  • Collaborate across programs to ensure consistent and inclusive practices
  • Attendance at monthly staff meetings

Recruitment, Onboarding and Workforce Development

  • Lead inclusive and equitable recruitment and onboarding processes that prioritize Indigenous employment
  • Support staff training, cultural and professional development, and capacity-building initiatives
  • Promote access to learning and training opportunities

Employee Relations, Equity and Organizational Culture

  • Support employee relations using culturally safe, trauma-informed, and restorative approaches
  • Promote equity and inclusion aligned with the Ontario Human Rights Commission
  • Foster a respectful, supportive, and culturally responsive workplace

Policy Development, Compliance and Governance

  • Develop and implement HR policies aligned with the Employment Standards Act, ON Human Rights Commission and other applicable legislation
  • Ensure policies reflect culturally grounded approaches and organizational values
  • Maintain compliance with legislative and funder requirements
  • All new policies and significant policy revisions shall be reviewed with the Executive Director before implementation.

Workplace Wellness, Safety and Cultural Integration

  • Work in collaboration with the Health & Safety Committee to maintain workplace safety standards and foster wellness
  • Promote *wholistic employee well-being (mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual)
  • Integrate Indigenous knowledge systems, including land-based practices and community accountability, into HR practices
  • Work with Elders and Knowledge Keepers to ensure cultural integrity in HR approaches

Qualifications & Assets
The ideal candidate will bring a combination of education, experience, and lived knowledge that supports a culturally
grounded workplace.
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate:

  • Lived experience as an Indigenous person and who has worked with the urban Indigenous population
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultural practices, protocols, and/or language
  • Familiarity with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action and the Friendship Centre Movement
    on a National/Provincial basis
  • Experience with anti-racist and decolonial HR practices
  • Understanding of trauma-informed approaches to workplace wellness and mental health
  • Knowledge of funder compliance and reporting requirements

Additional Qualifications:

  • Degree or diploma in Human Resources, Indigenous Studies, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • 2–5 years of experience in Human Resources, preferably in an Indigenous or non-profit setting
  • Experience working with an urban Indigenous community
  • Experience with Group Benefits & Pension plan administration
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and HRIS systems
  • HR designation (CHRP, CPHR, SHRM-CP), or working towards certification, an asset
