Garden River First Nation is seeking a detail-oriented, analytical, and highly motivated Financial Controller to join our team. The Financial Controller will play a critical role in supporting Garden River First Nation growth by overseeing all financial operations, ensuring accurate reporting, and providing strategic financial guidance. This is a high-impact, cross-functional role that supports the business with strong financial oversight, budgeting, forecasting, and compliance.

What you will do:

  • Development, implementation and compliance of financial policies and procedures,
  • Preparation of financial statements, summaries and other cost-benefit analyses and financial management reports
  • Evaluate financial reporting systems, accounting procedures and investment activities and make recommendation
  • Protects assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls.
  • Monitors and confirms financial condition by conducting audits and providing information to external auditors.
  • Ensures that financial risks are minimized, and investments are maximized in compliance with the goals of GRFN.
  • Manages corporate budget and ensure that staff budgets are accurate, analyzed and compliant with legislation and funding.
  • Complies with legislation and accounting principles that affects and/or governs first nations
  • Lead and oversee the accounting team with a dynamic leadership style that fosters trust, accountability, and productivity


What you can bring to the role:

  • Required CPA (CA, CMA, CGA) Designation
  • Member in good standing with CPA Ontario
  • Required five years related job experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of budgeting, reporting, monitoring, forecasting, analyzing financial and non-financial data.
  • Sage experience is an asset
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and knowledge of the First Nations cultural values and traditions.
  • Excellent computer skills (including Microsoft Office, internet, email, outlook, and financial management software.
  • Ability to work after hours or on weekends to attend meetings
  • Valid G License -Travel is required, must have access to a reliable vehicle
  • Must provide a clear CPIC sector check prior to employment (At Applicant Expense)
