Student and Family Counsellor

Under the direction of the Special Education Coordinator and in consultation with the Mental Health Leader, the Student and Family Counsellor will function as a member of a multidisciplinary team providing support services to students and families through consultation/assessment, crisis intervention, counselling, attendance investigation, community liaison/networking, prevention programming, professional development and child/family advocacy. In addition, s/he will provide the necessary professional skills to assist students in problem solving and conflict resolution in a safe and healthy manner to ensure student success.

LOCATION:                     Sault Ste. Marie, ON

EFFECTIVE DATE:       January 2019           


  • Relevant graduate or undergraduate degree (e.g., BSW, MSW, Master in Counselling etc.)
  • Registered member in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario
  • Minimum of 3 years working experience in the field
  • Experience working with children/youth experiencing social/emotional difficulties
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to develop and present training sessions
  • Ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a multidisciplinary team
  • Good computer skills, including word processing, communications software, Internet and e-mail
  • Excellent discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Familiarity with the Ministry’s mental health and addictions strategies
  • Familiarity with various evidence-based approaches is considered an asset


  • Experience in providing   counselling services from an evidence informed practice perspective
  • Experience working with schools and/or learners at the elementary or secondary school level
  • Knowledge of the history of the Indigenous Peoples of Canada and experience supporting Indigenous learners
